General dialogue[]

Acquaintance[]

Ernest I don't know if I'll ever get used to how dry it is here... How do you people deal with this?
Ernest I still need a few more columns to fill my quota... There's got to be something around here I haven't written about yet...
Ernest Living alone is harder than I thought it would be. Do you guys really not have anyone to hire for cleaning services around here?
Ernest People around here... seem nice enough. But whenever I need to feel a bit more at home, I stop in at Pablo's Parlor. That guy's got class in spades.
Ernest Sandrock? Sure, it's fine. I guess if I had to complain about one thing, I'd say the weather could be better! Also, there's nothing to do... and the public transportation is just barbaric, too, and- Er, sorry...
Ernest Adventure stories are trending on papers and magazines in Atara and Walnut Groove. But those stories all lack impact, and are full of speculations and exaggeration.

Buddy[]

Ernest My favorite author, Sir Leo, just published a new book. Obviously, I preordered it and- Eh? You want to read it? Well, I suppose after I finish, I could lend it to you, as long you don't bend the pages!
Ernest My sister's been sending me lyrics for her new songs to get my opinion again. I always say, "Good music, like all art, comes from the heart; don't just cater to the masses..." Hm? You don't think that's helpful?
Ernest I've heard that you do a lot of late nights; you really shouldn't, you know? I've already given up on such habits; if I get stuck writing something, I take a break. It's always worse if I try to force it.
Ernest Kind of a slow news day... Say, Player, heard any gossip from the Builder world? I'd settle for conjecture; anyone you think might be plotting something? Any sordid love affairs? Not even one? Ah, shoot.
Ernest I've been all around the Free Cities... Who would've thought that Sandrock of all places would become my fountain of inspiration? Although, fountains have water, don't they? Ahaha! Oh, uh... too soon?
Ernest I got a letter from my friend back in Atara, he said they've opened up a "water bar" where they sell "exotic" water at 100 Gols a glass! That's about twice what Burgess runs in a place where everyone needs it to live, hahah! Ironic, huh?

Good Friend[]

Ernest "After the third sandstorm I decided to observe the crimson town by morning and wait to witness the first person who dared to kick a tumbleweed I told myself then and there that this person would unequivocally and instantly be my lifelong friend-" Oh! Sorry, Player! I was just experimenting with the "stream of consciousness" style of writing. Isn't it amazing?
Ernest I had the nightmare again... I was writing something wonderful! But quickly I realized, if I ever stopped penning words, the ink would start to disappear right off the paper. So I wrote and wrote, until I could write no more! Finally, I collapsed, and came to; with my face buried in an empty notebook...
Ernest I'm thinking of adding a new character in my next Detective Ed novel! A loyal and resourceful Builder, who can create powerful gadgets, and isn't too shabby with a blade, either!
Ernest In Atara, I get stopped on the street from time to time, but it annoys me that they usually just recognize me as the brother of my famous sister. You might know her as "Luna..." That's the price of being behind the pen, I suppose...
Ernest Most of my classmates had to take on the mantle of their parents' businesses when they graduated. Meanwhile, I'm out here chasing my dreams. Sorry, not sorry.
Ernest You know, hah... It hasn't always been the easiest for me to make friends with people. So... you should know that, truly, I appreciate our kinship.

During a sandstorm[]

Regular lines[]

Ernest Is that dramatic tension in the air I feel, or is it just the sandstorm? Hah! You'd never in a million years see something so exhilirating back in the clemency of Atara...
Ernest Hm, this weather... could be the perfect guise for a bandit infiltration...! Posing as weary travelers, blurred mirages of men climbed over the horizon, and with the townsfolk none the wiser, there were already wolves among the sheep...

Buddy[]

Ernest In a slight slip of the pen, I may have slightly alarmed my Ma in my last letter, in which I described these sandstorms. Now she's saying if I ever don't check in with them for more than twenty-four hours, she'll send a search party out here...
Ernest Say, you go out in these sandstorms don't you? What's the most thrilling situation you ever found yourself in? Don't spare any details; getting the minutiae just so is the trick to really enthralling the readers...

On rainy days[]

Ernest I never thought about what rain would mean to someone who'd rarely seen it. I think I should write an article about it. Later, though. My notepad is soggy.

Festivals[]

Day of the Bright Sun:

Ernest Day of the Bright Sun... an apt name for a meaningful celebration. Observing how different people celebrate such a day, you realize the good that has come from such a dark time.

Showdown at High Noon:

Ernest My Pa always said it's better to ask to help than ask for help. No matter how many bodyguards you have, it's always better to learn to defend yourself.

Dance-off:

Ernest I generally prefer to let my pen do the dancing; gliding gracefully across the page... But... well, alright, you’ve convinced me!

Tour de Rock:

Ernest Sandrunning is a lot more fun than skiing. When I was young, we would go skiing often. I uh... wasn't very good, mind you. Had quite an accident one time, and broke my nose.

Running of the Yakmel:

Ernest I've heard that "nobody ever lives their life all the way up except bullfighters," but... I disagree. I find such sport involving animals rather barbaric. Ah, well. One day, it'll be no more regardless of my actions, as the sun also rises, with or without us. In a way, I may as well participate myself while I can.

Winter Solstice:

Ernest I really enjoy the Winter Solstice in Sandrock. Everyone is simple, just singing and dancing, a somewhat primitive, but pure, celebration. I think I'll write about it in my "humanities" column.

Speech bubbles[]

Greets a friend:

Ernest Hello, Player! I'm off to get lost in a book! Er, don't worry. Not literally. I'll be fine.

Greets a romantic partner:

Ernest As he saw his lover walk, he felt drawn to them, like a moth to a flame.

When the player has a new haircut:

Ernest Nice hairstyle. It's good to reinvent yourself from time to time, otherwise everything gets stale!

If the player has panda eyes from not going to sleep before 00:00:

Ernest Your eyes are... so heavy. You're starting to worry people, you know.

If the player attacks Ernest with a weapon:

Ernest Wow, the laws are really loose here...

If the player is under the effect of Fang's stomach issues potion:

Ernest Wow. Walking around in public like that. So brave.

During a party[]

During a party:

Ernest Pretty classy! Player, you have a lot of style!

Eating:

Ernest This all looks great!

No food:

Ernest Before... that was an appetizer, right? The main course should be here promptly.

Comments on the player's yard:

Ernest This house has a very distinct style.

Brought a gift:

Ernest Thank you for your invitation, here's a little something from me.

Birthday wishes:

Ernest I think words cannot express the beauty in growing older. Look into your heart, and sieze the day!

Ends a party in a good mood:

Ernest I have to say, I had a really good time today! I think I got a lot of inspiration. See you soon.

Ends a party in a neutral mood:

Ernest That was one heck of a party today. Goodbye, Player!

Conversations[]

Birthday[]

Ernest Did I ever show you this? One of my most prized possessions; a pen my father gifted me on my eighteenth birthday. Look here, it says, "Do Great Things, Spring 25." I always bring it out when I have writer's block; it's kind of like my secret weapon!

Other events[]

Guest at the player's wedding:

Ernest If I ever need to write about the perfect wedding, I'll always be able to draw upon this moment for inspiration. Congratulations, Player.

After the player wins the Workshop of the Year award:

Ernest Builder of the Year! Quite the accomplishment. Keep it up and maybe I'll be writing your biography one day! Let's spice it up a little though, give you an evil twin or something...

After Player has a child:

Ernest Ah, the Free Cities dream. Owning a house, married with a child, steady income with time to pursue your leisures... You're really living it up, Player. Congratulations!

After Player gets divorced:

Ernest Divorce is not the end of your story, just a chapter somewhere between now and your happy ending that is surely coming. Stay strong, Player. We all support you.

Main story conversations[]

After Mason's farewell party:

Ernest The old Builder leaving... is there some link to Logan? A mask? Hidden identities? It could be a devious plot... Hmmm...

After the Geeglers' attack on the oasis:

Ernest Lizards? Interesting... could they also be sent by Logan? "A tenuous alliance between man and beast. As we peer into this villain's dark heart, do we see a lack of morality, or humanity?"

After the attack on the Moisture Farm:

Ernest Sandrock is a truly fascinating place. So inspiring. Bandits, lizards... it seems the citizens here need to contend with a plethora of forces. I knew I was right to come here for material!

After the fireside meeting that starts the donation drive for the Dance-off:

Ernest In the face of a food crisis, the people of Sandrock banded together to bring sweet relief to their troubles. Both at once, a solution, and a release. Hard work, and pleasure. Insipiring, but I fear there is a lack of... intrigue. A twist is needed, perhaps?

After Moisture Farm Blues:

Ernest Phew, thanks for fixing the farm! This is the first time in my life I haven't had easy and instant access to fresh food and vegetables; honestly, I'm rather parched.

During Operation De-Geeglate:

Ernest Taking the initiative to strike the Geeglers? What will the headlines tell, I wonder. "Sandrock pits together and drives away the Geegler forces," or "Sandrock falls in a day; Geeglers strike, town unprepared."

After Belly of the Beast:

Ernest I heard that the Geegler leader fell off the bridge, is that right? Well, the villain has fallen, presumably the next act is a reprieve from danger.

After the fireside asking for bridge donations:

Ernest You know, the care package from my grandma never arrived, and I ran out of pocket money... I mean...uh, my advance. If I had it, you wouldn't need to donate.

After Mint comes to Sandrock:

Ernest I seem to have heard the name Mint somewhere... Some Vega 5 journal, perhaps? I can't seem to recall.

After the Shonash Canyon Bridge opening ceremony:

Ernest As the bridge was finally declared complete, a sudden sandstorm appeared. Through the haze, a figure, a silhouette, a frightful image... Sorry, I'm just thinking of a novel, any similarities are, of course, purely coincidental.

After the attack on the water tower:

Ernest Did I miss Logan again!? I was still sleeping when the Water Tower was attacked! Argh, I couldn't see them with my own eyes... forget it, my imagination will fill all the lacking details!

After Appetite for Construction:

Ernest I'm going to sleuth at the Water Tower to see if there are any clues... what? You've already repaired it? Ah, then the crime scene is somewhat sullied...

After the fireside meeting that welcomes Mayor Trudy back:

Ernest Ah, so that little girl, her mother really is... You know, when she told me her mother was "in the desert," I thought that was a euphemism for, well... I suppose I need to get used to how literal these Sandrockers tend to be.

After the fireside meeting about desert planting:

Ernest So the plan is to make Sandrock green and prosper to be bigger than Logan and his gang? Hm... I can't really use that kind of arc in my novel, but I wish you all the best!

After the fireside discussing the Little Woods' success:

Ernest If I'm being honest, when it comes to the tree planting, my heart's not really in it. Of course, I'm very happy for Sandrock, but, I just... I'm more interested in working on my novel, you know?

After The Kidnapping:

Ernest Logan's escape artistry really is amazing... Er! Sorry, I don't mean to be rooting for the bad guys, it's just... well, you have to admit, it's dramatic! Every time it seems like his back is against the wall, he finds a way to pull off the impossible at the last possible second!

After the fake bounty hunter comes to town:

Ernest The plot thickens! Will Bronco, the rugged and merciless bounty hunter, have what it takes to hunt down Logan and his devil-may-care band of ragtag ruffians? Find out next time in...! Well, I don't have a title yet...

After Andy is exposed:

Ernest Wow. That boy who impersonated the bounty hunter is one of my fans. You don't suppose... my work somehow influenced his turn to a life of crime? No... no, that just couldn't be possible...

After the real bounty hunter arrives:

Ernest Characters like Bronco the Kid you can't make up... I wonder if I'll be criticized if I include his likeness in the novel I'm working on...? Is he too unbelievable?

After the fireside announcing Musa's arrival:

Ernest Hm... Trudy is very concerned with impressing Musa. If this were a novel, certainly foreshadowing would imply that she is almost guaranteed to fail. Luckily, this is real life, so I'm sure everything will go exactly as planned.

After the disastrous party at the Blue Moon Saloon:

Ernest The way things went at the Blue Moon... How cartoonish. The only thing missing was someone getting hit on the head with an anvil.

During the Valley of Whispers pollution crisis:

Ernest Hm... so our new enemy is a form of gas? I've never been a fan of disaster books. I hope we get a flesh and blood villain responsible for all this. Er. From a narrative perspective, that's all! Some kind of... toxic butler...

After Clear the Air:

Ernest So it turns out the gas was a pollutant, even in the Old World? And they just kept making it, knowing it was dangerous? I can hardly believe such one-dimensional villains could ever exist in real life...

After the road to Portia project is announced:

Ernest Plot twist: Musa believes in Sandrock now! Very interesting. I wonder what changed his mind exactly? He was so negative before...

After Mission Unpossible:

Ernest Weird to think there are still kings and queens in this day and age. You'd think they'd be pure fantasy by now. Why do mutant animals have such a predisposition towards monarchy?

After the events of The Goat:

Ernest Player. Glad to have you back among the living. How frightful to think... one day someone could be out on the town, full of life, brightening the world around you and then... gone. Let's live each day to our fullest, Player!

After the events of The Goat if the player is in a romantic relationship with him:

Ernest It seems that fate had other plans. I thought you were gone, but here you are. Even Sir Leo could not have written a story with a twist such as this. The hero is reunited with his lost love...

After the traitor reveal after Fall from Grace:

Ernest So Logan turned out to be one of the good ones? Hm... I'd planned to have him go down in a blaze of glory in my novel... Maybe I still can... Maybe it's even better that way...

After Give me a Sign:

Ernest Hm... being killed in battle would be really bad for my writing career. Then again, it might really hone my writing skills... but I'm scared...

After The Battle of Sandrock:

Ernest We seem to be entering the final chapters of our battle against Duvos... Please, Player, be careful. I want you to be around for the epilogue... And ideally, a sequel...

After Sandrock Strikes Back:

Ernest A fitting end to a villain who considered herself grounded... now she floats above the atmosphere, able only to observe that she wished to control... Well done, Player. You delivered the best kind of justice: poetic justice!

After Wei comes to Sandrock:

Ernest Yan is a twin? An evil twin? I thought that only happened in stories, I didn't think it was ever a real thing... And... they're both on different sides of the law? I mean... come on...

After Logan's trial and sentencing:

Ernest I think I'm going to adjust my novel a bit, have my character do more nefarious things than Logan did. At Logan's actual trial, it was so obvious he was in the right that it just doesn't make for much of a narrative...

When the Portia Tunnel is finished:

Ernest Books are like a tunnel to another world! Your tunnel... is... a tunnel to another world. Congratulations on being the real thing!

After Ghost Recon:

Ernest Larry the Geegler seems like the kind of character a writer would add into an otherwise boring story to try to be wacky and appeal to kids. But I'm sure he's a great guy.

After The Sandrock Development Plan Dinner:

Ernest Logan wants us to build a monster hunting outpost after we're done with the forest? I smell "sequel..."

After Untilled Now:

Ernest The planting failed? Well, maybe this is just the low point in a rise to success type story! We kinda had that already, though, didn't we...?

After Let's School:

Ernest I love that clock you made, Player. The school one? It's as if it's up there saying, "The time is now," or... "Every second counts!" It really does feel like a new age for Sandrock. And who knows, maybe the next Sir Leo is sitting in that classroom as we speak!

After The Luo Down:

Ernest Huh? So the tunnel we worked so hard for didn't give us the water we needed, and it turned out there was plenty of water just up north the whole time? Well, that's how you know it's not a narrative and this is the real world! Although, we didn't notice it existed until it was incredibly convenient...

After The North South Water Diversion Project:

Ernest And with the water crisis solved, a new chapter begins for Sandrock... No doubt, you will continue to play a major role?

After Into the Abyss:

Ernest So Gary the Geegler took his opportunity with Larry out of the picture to move in on his wife? Or was it all planned? Cliche either way, if you ask me...

After Catori World is complete:

Ernest Suddenly my mailbox is blowing up... "You know Catori?" "What's the theme park like?" "How can I invest in Catori...?" Hm... should I be Catori's connection to Atara? Do I even have time for that...?

After Builder Cruise x Operation Flowergate:

Ernest What an incredible time to be alive... the whole town coming together for something greater than themselves... I have to write the news article.

After The Mama Tree:

Ernest Yes, I've heard... I'm still processing it... A tale of eternal love... reaching from this world into the next...

During The Jewel of the Eufaula:

Ernest I had hoped Sir Leo would come give a talk this year. Ah, well. I saw him in Atara ten years ago.

Post credits:

Ernest Hm... Hard to find inspiration these days. Not much happening, you know? Is it bad that... I wish we could have another whodunnit on our hands?

Side mission conversations[]

After Mi-ni Botanica:

Ernest Sandrock is truly becoming more livable day by day. We have all the necessities, and now we even have poetic touches, like flowers and gardening.

Gift responses[]

Some items gifted to Ernest will yield a special non-generic response.

Loved gifts[]

When gifted accessories he loves:

Ernest This is a fetching accessory. You have the taste of an artisan. You know, in the past, I had an entire collection of these, but now I live a more modest life. Just the clothes on my back, the books I brought, the jewelry box in my bedroom, and just a few suitcases of clothing. It's a nice feeling to have a reminder of my old life, though. Thank you.

When gifted decorations he loves:

Ernest Art is art in any form. Inspiration can come from anywhere. It is ignorant to believe that an author must only read to become great. An author's inspiration can come from a pot, a painting, or even a beautiful tree. Thank you, this is a wonderful piece.

When gifted furniture he loves:

Ernest It has been difficult adjusting to this town. I'm used to a certain... grandure that is not present in this humble town. My home, however, can be respite from the simple amenities of Sandrock. Thank you. This is a very beautiful piece, it gives me a fond reminiscence of my childhood.

When gifted relics he loves:

Ernest The secrets of the Old World... This is one of the most amazing sentences for an artist. We can wonder and postulate, how did they think? Of course, we have their novels, their art, but how did they think? I thank you for your gift. I will ponder whenever I look at it...

When gifted Painting: Desert:

Ernest A picture tells a thousand words... cliche, but it rings true. For all the books I've written, sometimes a painting can express as much information, as much meaning, if not more, in simple brush strokes. Thank you. This is beautiful.

Liked gifts[]

When gifted fruit or vegetables he likes:

Ernest Fruit and vegetables are brainfoods. To keep yourself focused, you need to make sure your body and mind are healthy. My housekeeper would regularly bring me fresh fruits and vegetables. Thank you for making me feel at home here.

When gifted books he likes:

Ernest Thank you. An appetite for inspiration can come from any book, and I appreciate you giving me more food for thought.

When gifted paint or pencils:

Ernest Those who have the pen to write, the desk to sit, and the tools to think, have all the power in the world. I just thought of that. Should I put that into a book? Thank you for the inspiration.

When gifted an Eagle Flute, a Goldfish Cutout, or a Yakmel Doll:

Ernest For, he thought, a true artist could never lie. Through their art, they bear the truth of their soul. That's from my third book, I can't believe you read it! That's why you gave me this, right?

Neutral gifts[]

When gifted Water:

Ernest Thanks, Player. It's hard to adjust to the whole "Conserve Water" statute, but nice to see you helping out like this.

Disliked and hated gifts[]

When gifted Gunpowder or Niter:

Ernest Player! There is a distance between reality and fiction for a reason! This kind of thing is reserved only for stories; it only leads to unhappy endings. I'll find a way to... get rid of this...

Commissions[]

Ernest can post commissions and requests at the Commerce Guild.

Commission text[]

General commission:

Ernest Need requested item from a Builder, and don't sweat the cash! I've got it covered.

Request board:

Ernest Many dishes remind me of home. I hope someone can help me bring back these memories.

Commission dialogue[]

After fulfilling a commission:

Ernest Huh? What did I order this for again? Tch, yeah, you're right, that is my signature. Alright, here ya go, Builder! Thanks for... whatever this is!

After fulfilling a request from the Request Board:

Ernest This smell... it gives a nostalgic, sentimental feeling. Sometimes memories of your home are the greatest inspiration. And a good dish is a novel in itself... A heated introduction, the rising tension of the mouthfeel, and finally, a conclusive aftertaste that leaves you stunned...

Play dates[]

Start and end[]

Play date starts:

Ernest I'm not really sure where I'd like to go... Why don't you write our story today?

Play date end in a good mood:

Ernest I enjoyed that. And I feel refreshed. I shall return to my work with a renewed clarity. Let's do this again sometime.

Play date end in a neutral mood:

Ernest It was nice getting out, but I should really get back. Great art doesn't get made out and about. Or really anywhere other than at a desk... See you around.

Play date end in a bad mood:

Ernest It has been said that tragic experiences can inspire great artistic work. However, that doesn't mean one should thank those responsible for the tragedy...

Sitting and chatting[]

Suggests to start the activity:

Ernest Let's have a sit by the oasis, it's a scene right out of a book...

Compliment appearance:

Ernest In that short moment, a suppressed look of life appeared on him; the overwhelming vigor was visible in his shining eyes. Your praise reminded me of that quote.
Ernest Thank you! But I hope you enjoy me for who I am and not for my appearance. And if not the former, liking me for my talent would be a decent alternative...
Ernest Ahah... your words are simple and clumsy, but your emotion; it is sincere.
Ernest The state of one's appearance reflects the state of one's mind. Plenty of artists I know think it's fine to just throw on some rags and get to work and... heh... well, let's just say: they're about as successful as they look.
Ernest Oh, that's a good one. Can you say it again? I want to write it down.
Ernest Thanks. There is a vast number of words in my dictionary to sing praise, but these words lose their luster as they are voiced. So, back into my mind they go.

Compliment work:

Ernest Despite having some success, I'm still learning. I'm fortunate my father had the presence of mind to start me working under Eduardo, my current editor. We don't always see to eye, but he certainly knows the business.
Ernest Hm. "Work." It's a flexible word, the meaning changing based upon... ahem... well, let me ask you this: who do you work for? The Commerce Guild? The town? Or do you do it for yourself? The latter, what I do, I don't really consider to be "work," in the traditional sense...
Ernest Thank you. I told myself when I started all this, "If I don't make it by 30, then I'm never going to make it, and I'll force myself to give up." And then... well, I "made it" with nine years to spare, haha...!
Ernest Sometimes I don't feel like I'm writing the novel, I feel like it's writing me. You know what I mean?
Ernest Haha, well, I'm always touched when someone enjoys my work... Sorry, how old are you again? Right, right... good...
Ernest Well, if I don't keep up this pace, my father will pull me back into the office and put an end to my travels. From there, I'll do three years local news, another three as an editor, then finish out the decade in the same building as vice president. Good for some, but not for me.

Compliment personality:

Ernest Ahah, well, I think having a little sister softened me up a bit. Even if I am only 30 minutes older. Still counts!
Ernest Haha, are you trying to get me to put a Builder into my novel? Well, I'm afraid I can't risk diminishing my vision, even for a friend. Each character must serve a purpose within the narrative. You understand, right?
Ernest Mm. Thank you. It's ironic, in the world of art, the most aloof of figures tend to be the most popular. And I suppose I'm no exception, either, ahah...!
Ernest Of course, I have shortcomings as well. But I believe these imperfections are part of what makes me who I am. So I'll learn to live with them rather than try to change them.
Ernest It's nice to get some encouragement. Perhaps when I finally finish my novel for the ages, part of the credit will go to you and your kind words. Ahem... er, that statement is not legally binding...

Asked about his past:

Ernest Perhaps my most hated question is when stupid reporters ask, "Hey, do you have a psychic connection with your twin? If one gets poked, can the other feel it?" A common misconception propagated by hack-y second-rate sci-fi rags.
Other than our blatant physical resemblance, we have basically nothing in common.
Ernest A few years ago, with the publication of the Maltese Pigeon, I received my first award. The aptly titled, "Up and Comer Award." But... I can't help but shake the feeling I wouldn't have even been nominated if not for my position at the Atara Times...
Ernest Out of everyone in my family, I admire my Grandpa the most. He was able to parley with high ranking officials from Duvos until they were speechless in a diplomatic meeting.
It always felt like a good topic for adaptation to me. Serious historical events that led to the prosperity and downfall of a family. But my Gramps was opposed to it...
Ernest I quit Atara University before I graduated. There was nothing on offer that could benefit me. If anything, the entire Free Cities is my upper education.
Going to the drama festival at Walnut Groove, climbing the tower at Tallsky, listening to the Church's debate on the "Origins of the Light" in Meidi... any one of them would be more fun than writing my graduation thesis.
Ernest My Ma was the leading actress in the musical "The Desert Goddess." The play was about how the goddess shed tears for the Eufaula Desert which turned into rain. The desert was turned into an oasis in an instant.
Though in my opinion, none of the screenwriters of the musical have ever been here. Their script is nothing like the actual desert. Heck, I'm about to laugh just thinking about how absurd it was.
Ernest When I first read the writing of Sir Leo, it left me breathless, even though I didn't fully understand it. My whole world was shaken by his words.
What's always been troubling me is the existence of master writers like Sir Leo. I doubt I'll ever reach his height. Is there then, any reasons for small-time writers such as myself to exist?
Ernest I felt a special bond between us even as we first met. I just knew. Sometimes fate is what it is, it's like different words intertwining on paper to form the perfect harmony, they just fit!
Despite being foolish, I can feel that fate is guiding me to meet certain people and do certain things.

Dining[]

Suggests to start the activity:

Ernest Food for the body and food for the soul are both equally important. Let's partake of the former.

Asked about work:

Ernest Eh? Oh, when you asked me that, my heart stopped for a second. I thought today was submission day! Whew...
Ernest Ernie's World is a special column that my Pa arranged for me. He allows me to write whatever I want, as long as I follow the standardized verbiage and be careful with my language. You know how it is, kids and people with influence all read it.
Ernest Most people have to retire, but writing is forever.
Ernest Hm. Poetry doesn't really sell these days. Most of us are turning to writing lyrics for Walnut Groove pop stars or even just writing ads. I wish the others weren't so spineless... doing such vapid work drags us all down. And for what, money? Tch...
Ernest If you hate someone, tell them to get into writing. Eh, sorry... not in a good mood. Had to tear up a few pages this morning...

Asked what he likes to do:

Ernest I love reading. A good piece is worth rereading a few times. Like the masterpiece by Sir Leo, "Lone Hussar". I read and analyzed that book countless times over.
Ernest I like talking with the townsfolk. Ms. Vivi told me a lot of tales of Sandrock a few days ago. I think she remembered some details wrong though. The age of the ex mayor kept changing.
Ernest I like to sleep in. Getting up early ruins my day. Plus, it's one of the perks of living alone. I get to control my own schedule!

Asked about his favorite things:

Ernest I'm pretty easy to satisfy when it comes to presents. Books, bookcases, pens, anything that has to do with writing would suffice. But please refrain from getting me expensive gifts. It'll be asking too much from the sender.
Ernest A lot of writers love coffee. Some were said to consume over a dozen cups a day. Me though? I like to keep a healthy diet, though. I find fruit and vegetables really helps you focus.
Ernest I live a relatively simple existence. Simple contemplation with a book is sufficient.

When ordering food:

Ernest Hmmm, what if they met in a Saloon... Oh? Could you order the food today, sorry, I just had a flash of inspiration.

Happy with the food player has ordered:

Ernest Hmm... the color is shining, and the aroma is so alluring... As for the taste, it will certainly be exquisite. Thank you, these are all my favorite Sandrock dishes!

Neutral towards the food player has ordered:

Ernest Hm, homely food, with a homely taste. It looks fine.

Unhappy with the food player has ordered:

Ernest Well, I know it's what you ordered... but if I'm quite honest, if we were back in Atara I would have got Gespacio, my chef, to make it all again.

Sand drawing[]

Suggests to start the activity:

Ernest Rolling waves, a sea of sand... Shall we stop and draw for a bit? Leave our mark here, at least til the winds blow it away...?

Drawing successful:

Ernest I must admit, I wasn't expecting much from this. I'm surprised you were able to create something so profound out of such a simple activity...

Drawing unsuccessful:

Ernest Builders can't draw. Just putting that down in my notebook. Can't be misrepresenting roles somewhere down the line, now can I?

Fireworks[]

Suggests to start the activity:

Ernest As the waves shine gold, light beholds; the works of fire in the sky, ignite aflame within my eye. I wrote that. Beautiful, isn't it?

Happy with the fireworks display:

Ernest Fireworks. Poetry of the sky. It's no surprise that even in ancient times they've been the subject of prose and poem alike. And yet we still struggle to capture the beauty of such a moment...

Unhappy with the fireworks display:

Ernest I was hoping to find some inspiration from these fireworks, but now I can hardly think straight...

Stargazing[]

Suggests to start the activity:

Ernest The constellations tell stories about the stars. Each constellation has such depth, and speaks a history of ancient cultures. Let's see what stories we can see in the sky.

All three constellations found:

Ernest It really is so beautiful. A starry sky, with vast representations of human ideals. Words can not do justice of our wonderful universe.

Two constellations found:

Ernest Don't worry, inspiration doesn't always come. If you can't find them it's fine.

One or no constellations found:

Ernest Is that one? Ahh... no... I can't seem to find any today. Well, inspiration doesn't just come on a whim!

Romance[]

Confession response[]

Accepted:

Ernest So this means you like me? In my travels, even in all my stories, this is the luckiest tale I've encountered. In the future, my poems will no longer be "bereft of purpose," as my detractors claim!

Rejected:

Ernest I'm sorry, I'm going to have to think about it before I reply. This is an important decision for me, for us. I don't want to take it lightly.

Rejected after a previous break-up:

Ernest Urgh... you can be a real headache sometimes, you know that? Just wait 'til I've calmed down a bit, then we'll talk. Okay?

Rejected when the player is already married to someone else:

Ernest Player, is this really something you want? No. I can't accept this. Don't worry, we'll pretend this never happened...

Regular lines[]

Ernest I was thinking... how about having you be my editor? You know your opinion is that which I value most...
Ernest If it's alright, I'd like to dedicate my next book to you. I'd write up a small foreward, and print your name on the title page, "To my beloved Player." Because, you know, without you, I don't know if I would've had the strength to carry on writing...
Ernest Sometimes, even in your presence, I feel like I'm missing you. It's not that I feel lonely, just... the same rush of emotions that fill my heart; I can hardly bear it...
Ernest I'm so glad I finally met someone who loves me for who I am and not for my money.
Ernest They say characters in books need to have depth, they can't just be one sided. Like take you for instance, not only are you a Builder, but ruin diver, planter. You nurture and support life. I not only have the best lover, but the best inspiration, too.
Ernest I want to write a poem to describe my love for you, but I'm afraid that my words could never be enough... Eh? No, it's not because I'm not skilled enough!
Ernest I hit another block in my writing the other day and went out for some air... I found that my mind was completely preoccupied with thoughts of... you! It seems I now require your presence to find inspiration, so, if you would, please... come closer...
Ernest My sister was just nominated for Atara Entertainment Weekly's "Most Huggable Celebrity" award, an honor I'm more than happy to have been passed over for. The only person I'd want to hug is standing right in front of me!
Ernest No matter how famous my sister gets, to me, she'll always be that blonde little mischief-maker with skinned knees and a button down jacket, two sizes too big for her...

Hints he wants to get married (Lover or higher):

Ernest Darling, not a moment goes by that I don't thank the stars for crossing our paths together... I just can't help but start thinking about the future... What's next for us. Have you... given it any thought?

During a sandstorm:

Ernest Ah, I was just thinking of you, and here you are. You know, it can be quite dangerous out there... I don't suppose I could convince you to stay and snuggle up with me and a good book?

On dates[]

Date starts:

Ernest Well in that case I'll put aside my thoughts. My mind is yours, whatever you decide, I'll do.

Date ends in a happy mood:

Ernest Every moment we spend together is like a long-awaited rain, relieving the drought in the fields of my heart... Where would I be without my muse?

Date ends in a neutral mood:

Ernest Hm... if I were to put my characters through a date like this, I'm sure my editor would throw it out without a second thought...

Date ends in an unhappy mood:

Ernest When the curtain opened, everything seemed so promising. But by the second act, everything had fallen apart... Perhaps I just need to lower my expectations...

Jealous[]

Caught the player cheating:

Ernest I can share books, ideas, clothes, even residence with others, but lovers... that is one this I can never share. This is too much for me, Player. There is not a sonnet written that can express the heartbreak you have caused me.

Regular lines:

Ernest I give you my sincerity, complete and unreserved. What you repay me is ruthlessness, which cuts deep to the core.
Ernest My insomnia has returned, and I find I don't have the energy for trivial social engagements... No, I don't blame you per say. But it certainly didn't help...

Breakup response[]

Ernest Well... I'll always cherish the time we spent together. I hope we can enjoy our lives in the future... however separate they may be.

Breakup letters[]

If the player marries someone else while dating him:

Player:

You really should've just broken up with me face-to-face. I could've handled it. And perhaps we could even stay friends. But now... I just don't see any way forward.
Adieu,
Ernest

Marriage[]

Rejects the player's proposal:

Ernest Thank you, I'm moved by your gesture. But marriage is not child's play. I have to think about it, okay?

Accepts the player's proposal:

Ernest What a touching gift, one truly coming from the heart. Of course my answer is yes, our story truly begins from today.

At the wedding ceremony:

Ernest In a fairy tale, the wedding is the end of the story. But for us, this is just the beginning. Being up on the altar together, I've never felt such joy. I felt like it was just you and I, and for a moment, the world belonged to us. I hope... we can be this way forever.

Gifted a Sweetheart Cake:

Ernest A rose by any other name would smell just as sweet. What would you like me to call you instead?

Regular lines:

Ernest Pet name, Luna sent another letter. Do you have anything you want to say? She keeps asking about you!
Ernest Pet name, do you want to have a party? You've been working so hard lately, why don't you call some friends and relax.
Ernest I need to put down my pen and relax sometimes, and housework helps me clear my mind.
Ernest Pet name, our marriage is like a tree, with its branches drifting into all the parts of our lives. They support each other, and grow to the clouds.

Unhappy in the marriage:

Ernest Huh? Of course I love you, babe! I love you like I love Sand Tea, isn't that enough?
Ernest I don't love you anymore. Plot twist: Just kidding! Yes, I do! ...Er, sorry, I guess I need to keep polishing that particular narrative...

Divorce response:

Ernest I understand. So from here you wish for us to go our separate ways. Well, thank you for accompanying me on this journey until now. I hope we both find our happy endings.

Engagement letter[]

Letter
From: ErnestErnest
Dear Player,

I wouldn't be myself if I didn't write to you like this.

As we greet this brand new day, I can't help but feel this blaze of emotion.

Unequivocal, unmatched, peerless, shining bright like a comet, burning proud through the sky.

And yet, these wild flames are contained, and last eternal, for we trap them together, in the warmth of our embrace.

Please accept this gift, though it is a pittance in comparison to my love for you.

Yours forever,
Ernest
